What is freight insurance?

Freight insurance is a policy that covers the full commercial value of a shipment in the event of loss or damage during transit. Unlike standard carrier liability, this coverage pays out based on the declared value of the goods, not the carrier’s weight-based liability limit.

Most shippers assume their freight is covered if something goes wrong. In practice, standard carrier liability under the Carmack Amendment only pays up to a per-pound rate, requires proof of carrier negligence, and can take months to resolve. For a $50,000 shipment moving on a standard LTL rate, you may only recover a few hundred dollars.

TLI Advantage+ is freight insurance coverage built into your TLI program. You add it at booking, declare the shipment value, and TLI handles the rest if a claim is needed.

Common Questions About Freight Claims

What is freight insurance?

Freight insurance is a policy that covers the full commercial value of a shipment if it is lost or damaged in transit. It pays based on the declared value of the goods, not the carrier’s weight-based liability limit.

What is the difference between freight insurance and carrier liability?

Carrier liability is the limited protection a carrier provides under its contract, calculated per pound of freight. It requires proof of carrier negligence and typically pays far less than the actual value of the goods. Freight insurance covers the full declared value and does not require proof of fault.

Does freight insurance cover all freight modes?

TLI Advantage+ freight insurance covers shipments across the modes TLI manages, including LTL, truckload, and partial truckload. Coverage is confirmed at the time of booking.

How long does a claim take to resolve?

TLI Advantage+ claims typically resolve within 30 days of filing. Standard carrier liability claims can take 3 to 6 months, and carriers can dispute or reduce the payout throughout that process.

How much does freight insurance cost?

The cost of TLI Advantage+ freight insurance is calculated based on the declared value of the shipment, the commodity being protected, and is quoted automatically at booking in ViewPoint TMS. Talk to your TLI account manager for details on coverage rates.

Is TLI Advantage+ the same as cargo insurance?

Yes. Freight insurance and cargo insurance refer to the same type of coverage. TLI Advantage+ is TLI’s freight insurance product, added at booking and managed through ViewPoint TMS.
