tms system explained

what is a TMS system?

A TMS system, or transportation management system, is software shippers use to quote, book, track, and manage freight shipments across carriers and modes. A TMS system centralizes carrier contracts, shipment records, proof of delivery, freight bills, and reporting in one platform.

Most TMS systems on the market are built for large enterprise teams with dedicated IT staff. ViewPoint is TLI’s TMS system built for the shipper. It gives your team access to the same carrier connections and data tools without the complexity or cost of an enterprise build.

ViewPoint connects to carrier systems using EDI and API, which means rates, bookings, and tracking updates move automatically. Your team books a shipment and the system handles the rest.

VIEWPOINT IN ACTION

See the TMS system that runs your freight program

One system for every freight function

ViewPoint replaces the patchwork of carrier portals, spreadsheets, and email threads most shipping teams rely on. Your team quotes, books, tracks, and reports in one place. TLI manages the carrier relationships and exceptions in the background.

ViewPoint runs on MercuryGate TMS infrastructure, uses Project44 for real-time visibility, and connects to Microsoft Power BI for business intelligence reporting. Your team gets the output without managing the technology stack.

Common Questions About TMS Systems

What is a TMS system?

A TMS system, or transportation management system, is software that shippers use to manage freight. It centralizes quoting, booking, tracking, and reporting across carriers and modes in one platform.

What is the difference between a TMS system and a freight broker?

A TMS system is software. A freight broker is a service provider. ViewPoint is TLI’s TMS system, included in every TLI service program. TLI acts as the freight broker managing carrier relationships, while ViewPoint gives your team the tools to run and track your freight program.

Does ViewPoint work for LTL and truckload?

Yes. ViewPoint handles parcel, LTL, partial truckload, truckload, intermodal, and other modes TLI manages. Rates and tracking work across all modes from one screen.

Do I need IT support to use ViewPoint?

No. ViewPoint is built for shipping teams, not IT departments. TLI handles setup, carrier connections, and system maintenance. Your team logs in and runs freight.

Is ViewPoint included in my TLI program?

Yes. Access to ViewPoint is included in every TLI service program from Standard through Enterprise. The features available depend on your program tier.

  1. Access to Power BI reporting requires a separate Microsoft Power BI subscription. TLI does not provide or manage Power BI licenses. ↩︎
