CVSA Operation Safe Driver Week July 2024

Operation Safe Driver Week July 7-13 2024

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has designated July 7-13 as this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week. The CVSA’s weekly initiative is aimed at enhancing driving behaviors through educational outreach and rigorous enforcement strategies across Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. They are targeting unsafe truckload driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, and impaired driving, with drivers facing potential warnings or citations for infractions.

CVSA 2024

The focal point of this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week is addressing reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. Truckload carriers operating vehicles with blatant disregard for safety are deemed reckless, and will be specifically targeted by the CVSA. Careless/dangerous driving involves operating a vehicle without due care or consideration for others. So, effective transportation safety programs, as highlighted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, requires robust enforcement coupled with high-visibility communication and outreach efforts. Operation Safe Driver Week endeavors to enhance road safety through proactive education and outreach initiatives. The CVSA will be paired together with responsive traffic enforcement to address dangerous driving behaviors promptly.

During CVSA week this year, law enforcement will vigilantly monitor instances of reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. The CVSA defines reckless driving as operating a vehicle with willful or wanton disregard for safety, while careless/dangerous driving entails insufficient attention or consideration for others on the road. Notably, in 2022, 42,795 fatal traffic crashes occurred in the U.S., underscoring the importance of promoting safe driving behaviors.

Safe Driver Week Expectations

In previous years, Translogistics observed a decrease in available Truckload capacity. During this week, carriers are delayed due to carrier inspections leading to detainments and reduced operating availability for some carriers. If you have an urgent shipment, please indicate it to your TLI team. We can provide extra tracking measures to ensure its timely delivery.

CVSA’s Operation Safe Driver Week plays a crucial role within its broader Operation Safe Driver Program. Going forward, they will offer tailored resources for commercial truckload vehicle drivers, including downloadable safe-driving public service announcement videos. This year the CVSA is providing complimentary Operation Safe Driver Week postcards to its industry and enforcement members. They are generating a collaborative effort involving state, provincial, territorial, and local law enforcement agencies. Beyond enforcement agents, they are working alongside the motor carrier industry and regulatory bodies such as the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Transport Canada, and Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation. The aim is to collectively reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities across North America’s roadways.
