Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is the difference between Limited Operations and Closed Status?

While the exact definition varies by carrier, a limited operations status generally means most of the terminal is not operating. The office, dock operations, and line haul operations may still be operating to keep freight moving in the system, but pickups / delivers are usually suspended. Closed status indicates that no operations are taking place at the terminal.

Q: How is my Shipment Affected?

A shipment can be directly or indirectly impacted by service advisories. For example, a shipment going from the East Cost to the West Coast generally lands in the MidWest before landing on the West Coast. If there are limited operations in MidWest terminals, then there may be potential delays to the shipment, indirectly. Direct impacts occur when the pickup and delivery area are directly impacted by the service advisory.

Q: What causes Service Advisories?

Severe weather and natural disasters are the primary cause of service advisories. This includes winter weather, tropical and hurricane storms, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Other advisories include a specific embargo, system outages, and any instance where a carrier is operating at a status below normal.

Q: What is a Service Embargo?

An embargo is a pause on a specific service for a specific time period. Less-than-Truckload (LTL) carriers will place embargoes on specific products or services when the carrier is dealing with challenges to meet customer needs. For example if the temperatures drop below a specific degree, regions that often have severe cold will place an embargo on Protect from Freeze Services. This helps protect the carrier from failing at their service level. A service embargo can be terminal based or company-wide.
